The movie is a direct remake of Hawk’s Western with John Wayne and Dean Martin from 1959 “Rio Bravo”. A 27 year old James Caan was cast in “El Dorado” as the knife throwing gambler “Mississippi”. Although John Wayne had fired Robert Mitchum from his film “Blood Alley”(155), they enjoyed working with each other. The opening credits feature the Western paintings of Olaf Wieghorst, a Danish-American painter who also has a role in the film as a Swedish gunsmith named Swede Larsen .
