SUMMARY:Moderate Paced Mountain Bike Ride - Gypsum Canyon
DESCRIPTION:If you enjoy riding in scenic wilderness on uncrowded single/double track trails\, then please join us on this docent led ride in Gypsum Canyon Wilderness Park. Gypsum is a new addition to OC Parks wilderness park offerings and while compact in size it has five new single-track trails that wander up to and around an overlook providing panoramic and interesting views of Gypsum Canyon and the surrounding lands. Reviewing the 1-through-5 Difficulty Ratings will help you evaluate your readiness to participate in this level-3 activity on the land. Electric Mountain Bikes of any class or type are not permitted. We will start with a gentle climb up Gypsum Canyon Road for about one mile and then will climb and descend each of the three trails that go up to the lookout as well as an additional trail that wanders around on the hillside. The ride is 11 miles long and has approximately 1700 feet of climbing/descending. Like much Orange County mountain biking\, this route primarily climbs and descends and be advised that there is not a lot riding on the flat. This ride is primarily on single/double track trails that are non-technical but may have some sections with loose soil and small rocks. The climbs are generally not steep (4-8%) but do have some very short steeper sections that some riders may choose to ‘hike-a-bike’. The ride will regroup as needed and an opportunity will be provided for a snack break at the overlook. Please note that you will be asked to adhere to the following measures in order to participate: Be registered in advance\, no walk-up registration is permitted. Arrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail\, including water\, proper attire\, and closed-toe footwear\, first aid\, health needs etc. Restrooms will be available\, but facilities will not be sanitized for each individual. All participants are required to sign a liability waiver upon arrival at the staging area and before beginning the activity. The waiver can be previewed here: IRC Liability Waiver You may be prevented from participating if you do not adhere to the above protocols. SUMMARY:Tuesday Morning Fitness Hike on Paved Hicks Haul Road
DESCRIPTION:Ready for a workout? Forget the gym for the day and head outside! Join us for an exhilarating morning fitness hike on the paved Hicks Haul Road in OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. This hike allows you to choose between a 3\, 6\, or 8 mile route \, all of which are conducted at the speed of about 3.0 to 3.5 miles per hour. The footing on the asphalt paved road is smoother than dirt roads and single track trails normally found in Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve\, but is beginning to show its age with cracks\, crevices and an occasional dip. Otherwise\, the terrain is smooth\, so this is a great walk for anyone who wants a “wilderness experience” without getting dirty! The 6 and 8 mile routes experience two fairly steep ascents and descents. The 3 mile route takes you to the top of Loma Ridge and back down. Along the way\, you will have sweeping views of much of Orange County and the Santa Ana Mountains. Various animals\, like hawks\, deer\, and lizards are also frequently seen in this area. Participants should be confident in their ability to hike 3\, 6\, or 8 miles at a steady pace. Please come prepared with proper hiking attire\, ample water and adequate sun protection. Because of the paved surface\, you may wear walking or running shoes instead of hiking boots. For the longer distances\, at least 2 quarts of water (64 oz) is recommended. Ages 16 and up. SUMMARY:Wildfire Awareness Series: The Resiliency of the Coast Live Oak
DESCRIPTION:For Wildfire Awareness Month\, spend the morning learning about fire dependency\, resiliency and plant management as we take a slow-paced interpretive hike along the back-country ridges and valleys of Weir Canyon\, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. As we travel through the majestic oak woodland\, we will discuss how the mighty Coast Live Oak has evolved adaptations to be resilient to wildfire. We will also discuss how anthropogenic fires have increased and how the Coast Live Oak is affected by the change of fire frequency. Total round-trip distance is 5 miles with an elevation gain of 500 feet at an average moving rate of 2.0-2.5 miles per hour. Some of the hills are strenuous and we will take breaks as needed. Participants should be in good hiking condition and have previously completed a similar distance hike. Please come prepared with a backpack\, plenty of water (at least 1 liter)\, snacks\, sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes or boots\, sunscreen\, first aid kit\, and all other supplies to keep you safe and healthy on the trail. Each hiker must carry their own water and supplies. Under-prepared participants may be denied access to the event. Additionally\, in an effort to respect and protect all employees\, volunteers\, and participants\, please do not sign up or attend if you are not feeling well\, exhibiting any symptoms of illness or have been in recent contact with someone who was ill. Reviewing the 1-through-5 Difficulty Ratings will help you evaluate your readiness to participate in this level-3 activity on the land. Please visit our FAQ page for answers to activity specific questions you may have prior to registering. Learn more and register here.
